‘His wife said it was her period’: Police officer to pay N10 million for raping 2-year-old girl


A police officer in Nasarawa has been found guilty of raping a toddler and has been ordered to pay N10 million in compensation.Corporal Anthony Onoja is said to have injured the victim and caused her to bleed as a result of the act.The state high court which passed down the judgment said that the act was a violation of the girl’s human rights.Daily Trust reports:Justice A. Asmau in her judgment held that the action was unconstitutional and a breach of her fundamental right to life respect and dignity of human person.While describing the conduct of the corporal as that of animals, she ordered comprehensive medical treatment of the child.Mother of the child, Mrs. Ngozi Obi Onwudiwe through her lawyer, Barrister Esther Uzoma had brought the fundamental rights enforcement action on November 6, 2013 following the assault on the baby.The mother of the child had told the court that on 15th June, 2013 her little child was found to have been indecently assaulted, defiled and had unlawful carnal knowledge of by Corporal Onoja at his house in Kabiyo Osino Pure Water, Mararaba, Nasarawa state.She said in Onoja’s room, the child was wailing out of pains and anguish and blood gushing out of her private part adding, “Corporal Anthony Onoja’s wife rationalized the blood gushing out of the child as her monthly period.”
